Symptom

The setup of ownCloud and Nextcloud recommend to activate a memory cache. How can you do that?

Solution

PHP version 5.6 and newer versions include a byte code cache “opCache” that caches compiled scripts so that they do not need to be re-compiled for each request. This cache is activated on your Bitpalace web space by default. You do not need to configure anything for it. The notice in the ownCloud and Nextcloud setup routines refers to the user cache “APCu”. With that add-on module of PHP user data can be stored in a cache, too.

In the past APCu lead to incompatibilities and upgrade issues on web servers. For that reason the module is not included in the web space and cannot be added on request. For the speed of the web space it does not matter. Owncloud, Nextcloud and other applications are executed lightening fast anyway, because our hosts use other mechanisms to achieve a very high server speed. Operating ownCloud and Nextcloud are both trouble-free and delay-free despite the memory cache notice in their setup.
