Symptom

You open a subdirectory of your website that does neither contain an index.html, nor and index.htm, nor an index.php file. The web server responds with a 403 access denied error. You would like to see the directory content, a list of all files in that directory.

Cause

For security reasons the directory index is disabled by default.

Solution

Activate the web server option that control directory listings. Create an .htaccess file or edit an existing .htaccess file in the directory where you want to have see a directory listing. Add this line to the .htaccess file:

Options +Indexes

Now, when you open the subdirectory and have no index file in that directory, the web server will deliver a directory listing instead.
