Solution

Bitpalace Business Booster customers can have Nextcloud installed free of charge by support or install Nextcloud themselves. If you would like Bitpalace support staff to install it, please just let us know in which domain or subdomain Nextcloud should be installed. Please note the information in step (3.) of the following installation instructions.

If you want to install Nextcloud yourself, you can do the following:

First a few preparations:

1. Log into the webspace control panel.

2. Click the “Websites & Domains” menu.

3. Do not install Nextcloud in a directory under an existing website. Instead, give Nextcloud its own home in a domain or subdomain. Either use an existing, empty domain or click on the "Add subdomain" button and create a new subdomain.

Many Nextcloud users name their subdomain “nextcloud” or “nc”. This makes it easy for hackers to find Nextcloud installations. We recommend using an unusual term or a cryptic sequence of characters such as "nc3x7", "ab8n2" or similar. For example "ab8n2.domainname.xx".

The document root into which you are installing Nextcloud should be empty. You should therefore delete any index file that may already be there. You can do this e.g. with the file manager of the webspace control panel.

4. Set up an SSL certificate for the new domain or subdomain. To do this, click on the "SSL" icon in the webspace control panel. After the SSL certificate has been created, you can choose a few options. Activate permanent redirection to HTTPS and switch on HSTS.

5. Nextcloud works best when used with a database. To do this, create a database in your webspace account. To do this, click on the “Databases” menu and then on the “Add database” button. Make a careful note of the database access data. That means: database name, username and password. The server name is localhost.

Now you can start with the actual installation.

6. Load the Nextcloud "Web Installer" into the document root directory of your domain or subdomain where you want to install Nextcloud. To do this, download the file https://download.nextcloud.com/server/installer/setup-nextcloud.php and upload it to your document root directory. You can do this with your FTP program, for example. You can also upload the file with the file manager of the webspace control panel or load the setup-nextcloud.php file into your document root directory via SSH with the wget command directly on the Linux command line.

7. Open the setup file in a web browser, e.g. https://ab8n2.domainname.xx/setup-nextcloud.php

Follow the instructions of the Nextcloud installation.

8. Nextcloud asks you where you want to install Nextcloud. Enter a period “.” there so that Nextcloud is installed in the document root directory of the domain.

9. Nextcloud asks you how the data should be saved. Select “MySQL/MariaDB” as the database. Enter the login details for your Nextcloud database that you noted in step (5.).

10. Follow the further instructions of the installation routine until the installation is complete.
