Symptom

Umlauts such as ä, ö, ü, ß and letters with diacritical marks such as é, è, ê etc. are sometimes or always displayed incorrectly in your website.

Cause

always displayed incorrectly in your website.

Page encoding and character input does not match the character encoding setting of the web server or PHP script.

Solution

To ensure that special characters in web pages are always displayed correctly and do not depend on the character encoding of scripts or servers, you can use "HTML entities" instead of the characters. The characters are replaced by certain predefined strings, for example

ä = ä
ö = ö
ü = ü
ß = ß
é = é
è = è
ê = ê

etc.

The word "übermäßig" would thus be written in the source code of the page "übermäßig". Because this encoding is largely independent of the character set, your page will still be displayed properly even if the character encoding of scripts or servers do not fit the page.
