Symptom

You are trying to import a very large database. Neither with the "import image" function of the webspace control panel nor with the import function of phpMyAdmin does the import work. Upload and import always fail with an upload error or a timeout.

Cause

If the dump file size is larger than the maximum file upload size of 2 MB, it cannot be uploaded directly. Instead, you can upload the file via FTP first and then import it using the “Import Image” feature of the database page on the web space control panel. But even that may fail, because in addition to the upload limit more limits apply, for example the maximum allowed script runtime. Even if you upload a large database file (greater than 2 MB) via FTP and import it with "import image", this can fail because of too long a script runtime.

Solution

The only correct and always working solution to import large database dumps is to import them step by step using special software. The "BigDump" program by Alexey Ozerov has proven to be particularly effective. BigDump can import large database files step by step. It loads some of the data, then quits itself, restarts, and continues with the next part of the data. This lets the program avoid crossing the maximum possible script run time. BigDump is available free of charge via the following link.
