Symptom

When you visit your domain, the browser does not display anything or shows an SSL error message that the certificate does not match the domain.

“This is not a secure connection. Hackers could try to steal your data from [domain] ...
NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID ”

and further

“This server couldn't prove that it is [domain]. His security certificate comes from [other domain] ... "

The warning might be slightly different depending on the web browser you are using.

Cause

You have switched on SSL/TLS in the "hosting settings" of your domain, but have not selected a certificate that matches the domain, but rather the host certificate, for example.

NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID because the SSL certificate does not match the domain - Illustration no. 1

However, since the host certificate only protects the host name, it does not match your domain.

Solution

Create your own SSL certificate for your domain using the “SSL/TLS Certificate” icon in the “Websites & Domains” menu. For detailed instructions, see the related FAQ article.
